Counterattack

The Spike, Elyse Colony, 268 Light-years from Sol

Dain walked with Porsha across the docking bay towards their transport. After fighting their way back through the station to get here, seeing it was a welcome relief. Finally, they might be able to get a few moments’ rest.

“For a liberated station, there’s a hell of a lot of trouble makers here,” Dain remarked.

Ahead, the Wraiths walked with the Terran troops on either side of the Accord officers they were taking as prisoners of war.

Commander Davon, who walked on the other side of Porsha, looked across at him. “It’s because of these guys.” He pointed to the prisoners. “They’re the last remnants of the Accord leadership left on the station. They came to try and free them.”

Porsha nodded. “Sounds about right.”

“So, do you think that was the last of the resistance?”

“Probably,” the commander replied. “Certainly the last of the most volatile ones, sure.”

Dain was glad to hear it.

“What are you planning to do with them?” the commander asked.

“We’ll get them back to base and get new orders,” Porsha replied. “I’m guessing we’ll be back.”

The commander nodded. “We’ll be happy to have you.”

“Thank you, Commander,” Porsha replied as they approached the ramp up into the Transport. “Get them inside and strapped in.”

The Wraiths did as she asked and started to usher the prisoners up the ramp. Dain stepped forward and nudged the rearmost of the group.

“Go on, move.”

The prisoner grumbled, but followed his orders and walked into the ship. Dain brought up the rear, making sure none of them tried to make a break for it, although, where they’d try to run was anyone’s guess. Dain guided the prisoner before him into a seat and strapped him in.

“You’ll get yours,” the Accord officer sneered.

“Is that right?” Dain replied, his tone flat. “Looks like all the other Dynasties have sided with the Nexus, so how long do you think you can last against us, and the Crux?”

“The Crux are a hoax, idiot.”

Dain paused in surprise and looked into the man’s eyes. “What?”

“They’re fake. It’s all a ruse to end the war and bring everyone into line.”

“A ruse? By who?”

“The Terrans, of course. This all started because of them. The fact that you can’t see it tells me whose side you’re on, Terran.” He’d used that last word as an insult.

“You know how crazy you sound, right?” Dain asked, finally getting his head together enough to respond properly.

Sirens suddenly blared through the hanger bay. “BATTLE STATIONS, ENEMY FLEET INBOUND.”

Dain locked eyes with the prisoner again, who smiled wickedly at him.

“Shut it, you,” Dain barked, and strode out of the back of the ship and approached Porsha and Commander Davon. “What’s going on?”

The commander looked up, as Dain noticed the stream of EM signals entering his head. “It’s a Wraxleith fleet.” the commander said, his face pinched with worry.

“Wraxleith? Not the Crux?”

He shook his head as Dain looked over at Porsha. “What do you think?”

“I think we might need to get out of here,” she answered.

The station shuddered as a muffled boom rang through the station.
